easy for Leonard Smith. There were road blocks
and obstacles to overcome. Mr. Smith was
diagnosed with learning disabilities which
represented functional limitations to complex
task. With the help of special education
classes, Leonard graduated from University City
High School, Philadelphia, in 1991.
Fresh out of school, Leonard knew he wanted to
work, but was unsure of his vocational calling.
In 1993, he was referred to Elwyn where his
determination and diligence helped him graduate
with a certificate from the Custodial Skills
Training Program in October 1994. From there
things began to look up for Leonard. He applied
for and was hired by Marriott/ Sodexho as a
janitor, a job he kept for ten years.
In his desire to find a better paying job with
benefits and increased responsibilities had he
returned to Elwyn for Placement and Employment
Support Services. In August, 2004, Leonard was
hired as a Supervisor for PEP/PIBH Janitorial
Contract at the Pennsylvania State Office
Building in Philadelphia, PA. In his current
position, Leonard has proven himself over and
beyond the call of his responsibilities daily.
Leonard is dedicated, dependable and he ensures
that his janitorial assignments are completed
timely and efficiently. His soft spoken demeanor
and his positive attitude wear well with his
peers, employees, staff and visitors he
encounter daily at the State Building.
