The road to successful employment was not always easy for Leonard Smith. There were road blocks and obstacles to overcome. Mr. Smith was diagnosed with learning disabilities which represented functional limitations to complex task. With the help of special education classes, Leonard graduated from University City High School, Philadelphia, in 1991.

Fresh out of school, Leonard knew he wanted to work, but was unsure of his vocational calling. In 1993, he was referred to Elwyn where his determination and diligence helped him graduate with a certificate from the Custodial Skills Training Program in October 1994. From there things began to look up for Leonard. He applied for and was hired by Marriott/ Sodexho as a janitor, a job he kept for ten years.

In his desire to find a better paying job with benefits and increased responsibilities had he returned to Elwyn for Placement and Employment Support Services. In August, 2004, Leonard was hired as a Supervisor for PEP/PIBH Janitorial Contract at the Pennsylvania State Office Building in Philadelphia, PA. In his current position, Leonard has proven himself over and beyond the call of his responsibilities daily.

Leonard is dedicated, dependable and he ensures that his janitorial assignments are completed timely and efficiently. His soft spoken demeanor and his positive attitude wear well with his peers, employees, staff and visitors he encounter daily at the State Building.
